Restore Carbon recently travelled to Canada to explore opportunities for scaling peatland-based carbon removal in North America.
During the visit, our colleague Renze met with several local partners to discuss potential collaborations around biomass sourcing, peatland conditions, and future project development. Canada hosts some of the world’s largest peatland areas, as well as significant underutilised biomass streams, making it a promising region for large-scale carbon removal solutions.
The meetings focused on how Restore Carbon’s subsurface biomass storage approach could potentially be applied in Canadian landscapes, while working closely with local land managers, research institutions, and project developers.
The visit is part of Restore Carbon’s broader effort to expand peatland carbon removal beyond Europe. Alongside ongoing projects in the Netherlands and research collaborations in Ireland, the discussions in Canada represent another step toward developing internationally scalable peatland carbon removal projects.
