Four years ago, the idea for Restore Carbon was conceived. It originated in the backyard, inspired by a remark from Melle, the nine-year-old son of one of the founders. He wondered, “If fossil fuels come from the earth, why not put trees back?” This simple yet profound question set us on a mission. We assembled a team of specialists to tackle this challenge: Jurriaan Reijs, Rene Leegte, Renze Schram, and Paul Smits. Each brought their unique expertise to the project. Rene Leegte handles public affairs, Renze Schram is the inventor and oversees production execution, Jurriaan Reijs, PhD, is responsible for research, and Paul Smits is in charge of sales and project management.
In the Netherlands, we observed that draining the peatlands was gradually settling in the country. This insight led us to consider combining several problems into one solution. Restore Carbon developed a unique and patented technology to store carbon in peatlands permanently, resulting in the availability of carbon credits.
