Peatlands in Canada

Canada is home to some of the world’s largest and most important peatland ecosystems. Peatlands cover around 12% of the country and are particularly extensive across the boreal regions, where they have accumulated and stored carbon for thousands of years. They are important not only as long-term carbon stores, but also for biodiversity, water regulation and the resilience of northern landscapes.

These vast peatlands are increasingly affected by climate change, wildfires and human disturbance. When peatlands become damaged or dry, they can lose their ability to store carbon and can become significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Protecting and restoring these ecosystems is therefore an important part of Canada’s natural climate solutions, while creating opportunities for innovative approaches to long-term carbon storage.
